"In my life, the important question is no longer, "Which hat am I wearing today?" but "Which bag (or bags) am I carrying?"

"I've always been notorious for toting most parts of my work (and play) with me - just in case. Although a drive will last only an hour, better take along a week's worth of knitting and a good book or two; you never can tell. This habit may come from living on the Prairie - no matter what the weather, I'm always prepared for the Blizzard of '96 (or whatever year the last big one was) - but it's a life long pattern, not apt to change.

What has changed is the bag. Once the quest was for the perfect, multi-purpose, all accomodating carryall. Now my approach is modular - several small bags that can be combined and recombined to allow me to carry as much as, but no more than, a day or a flight or a lunch break requires.

This many-bag approach to mult-itasking gives me the excuse to have lots of bags. Less, obviously, it helps me to focus. When I pick up my little knitting bag, I know what I'm going to do (knit) and even better, I know what I'm going to knit (whatever it holds); no need to consider the pros and cons of working on the handful of undones that circle around me at home. There are times when I really appreciate having no choices.

My solution to this one of life's little problems may or may not be yours, but once you start, I wager you may find it equally hard to resist knitting yet another bag. It's so easy to just pick up a couple of skeins of something you love and cast on. Soon your knitter's dozen, like ours, will grow to twenty-something or more."
