The lace patterns presented in this book are the culmination of many years of collecting knit laces and lace instructions. Most of these patterns were created in the last half of the 19th century. Their delicate look, and beautiful designs reflect the era they come from.

The author has created her own system of symbols for transcribing the old lace patterns, and provides detailed written and illustrated instructions for reading the charts. There is also a very useful section on dealing with special problems in lace knitting.

Most of the 100 patterns are for edgings; from simple edgings of 5 to 7 stitches in width, to 95 stitches wide. The names of the patterns are often as lovely as the lace; Leaf and Berry, Point d'Esprit, Rose Leaf and Trellis, and Valenciennes. There are 10 patterns for background stitches, again from simple to more complex designs.

The section on knitted lace projects has some beautiful pieces. There is a diamond patterned shawl done in a fine fingering yarn, and also in a finer linen lace thread. In the accompanying photograph the fine linen version appears as if light as air....
