From the distributor..... Knitting is an art, a craft, and a part of our culture. Throughout Europe, innumerable elaborate knitting patterns were passed on from generation to generation - from mothers to daughters, but also to neighbors and friends. The art of peasant knitting provides special treasures - before today it was the foundation of traditional dress. In order to preserve this precious knowledge for future generations, Lisl Fanderl, with unfailing devotion, collected the patterns published in the three volumes of The Tradition of Knitting from women who were known for their remarkable talentas well as from Bavarian, Austrian and Swiss museums. Every single pattern was exactly reworked to the single stitch. and translated into easy-to-read knitting instructions accompanied by photographs. Lisl Fanderl's one-of-a-kind collection of patterns soon became a standard reference on knitting.

Lisl Fanderl (1922 - 1999) was married to the famous Bavarian musician Wastl Fanderl with whom she had three daughters. The author's biggest passion was handcrafts, and she was uniquely able to inspire others. Thus, it was easy for her to entice knitting artists to provide her with their patterns for her classic book. Lisl Fanderl herself worked "day and night" to assemble the patterns for these three volumes.
