In the Author's Words....
"The bottom of the ragpile was delivered at the factory just after World War II, when nothing was considered too ragged to be used in shoddy production. When working with the rags, I discovered that although most of the garments could no longer be worn, they were useful in unravelling the history of knitting." (pg 12)
Everyday Knitting-Treasures from a Ragpile
When the author purchased a factory which recycled old woolen items, she discovered a treasure of knitting patterns in the old worn out garments. As she went through the garments she pulled out patterns that attracted her attention, then organized them by themes. "I was about to begin looking for things well on their way to disappearing forever. Small voiceless figures and patterns were stacked in silence, and I felt as if they were trying to tell me something." (pg 12)
Everyday Knitting is for those fascinated by old knitting patterns and knitting history. There are dozens of pages of beautifully patterned sweaters, mittens and socks, plus a detailed history of knitting in Norway. There are lots of great photos of knitting from patterns published in the 1940's, several historical photos and cartoons.
The chapters headings are:
- How it all Started
