In the Author's Words.....
'I think the knitter was really trying to understand the structure of lace, and in so doing, has taught me much about it. The beauty of this sampler lies not so much in how it looks, but in what it can teach to those who study it.'

Knitting Lace documents the patterns of a 19th century sampler which was probably made in southern Germany or Austria. The piece is now in the care of The Brooklyn Museum, and was meticulously deciphered by one of it's volunteers, Susanna Lewis.

The sampler is surmised to have been a visual recording of patterns learned by the original knitter. The more simple designs in the early part of the sampler are elaborated, played with, and evolved into more complex lace patterns. Little did this original knitter know how many others, through this book, would follow her path in their apprenticeship in the art of lacemaking.

There are 91 patterns in total, 83 of lace, and 8 in textured patterns. For each section of lace in the sampler there is a photograph, and both written and charted instructions. To augment understanding the structure of lace, there is a section called 'A Lace-Knitting Workshop'. Drawing on the patterns from the sampler, individual structural techniques and principals are identified, and fully explained.

There is also a chapter on Charting Lace Patterns, and 4 lace projects ( a pullover, a childs dress, a pair of socks, and a shawl) which incorporate some of the lace patterns learned from the sampler. For both the beginner and more experienced knitter of lace, this book is an excellent teacher.
