In the Author's Words.....
"In this book, I offer patterns for the motifs in period garments from folk costume traditions and insights into art history. In this way, artist biographies and cultural history can be combined with knitting documentation so that knitters will become more familiar with these artists as well as the origins of our knitting traditions." (pg 9)
From the publisher.....
"Our cultural heritage is a wellspring that everyone can draw from, build on, add to, and develop for future generations. This book shows how artworks can be used to discuss knitting history even if the artists didn’t have that in mind when they painted.
Often people dressed in knitted clothing were depicted so precisely that the knitting can be copied stitch by stitch. Artworks also contain invisible lead threads tied to stories about knitting not immediately apparent in the pictures.
The yarns and techniques found in old knitted remnants have been the springboard for Annemor Sundbø’s updated designs for knitters and anyone interested in cultural heritage."
The author has created guidelines for 20 knitting projects based on them (not detailed instructions). In fine art the stitches were produced so clearly one can copy the patterning stitch by stitch. There are charted stitch designs, charts with calculations for sizing, and general schematics with shaping, to help you translate the 'knitting art designs' into a garment for yourself.
