A maidens' skill and art in knitting mittens was traditionally used to attract suitors and towards this end she may have knit 100 to 200 pairs! The author was first captured by the beauty of Latvian mittens when her mother-in-law brought out her treasured mittens.

The book documents the techniques and designs of Latvian mittens in both English and Latvian, with colour photos of over 70 beautiful designs and b&w charts. There are several techniques, edgings, styles and shapes discussed, plus instructions for making mittens from 4 different areas within Latvia - 1 pattern for children, 1 for men and 3 for women.
