In the Author's Words....
"Nowadays, traditional cozy sweater styles such as Arans, ribs, and Fair Isles, are most commonly worn when needed for warmth out-of-doors. An eyelet lace sweater is a beautiful choice for situations where light and airy clothing is more suitable; comfortable to wear in today's temperate home and workplace environments.
Lacework sweaters can sometimes appear a bit dressy for everyday wear. I've been able to use this wonderful
concept of aerated clothing in ways that are acceptable anytime; by using basic styling and plain stitch patterns
like simple eyelet ribbing and all-over textured designs. The resulting garments are truly versatile, suitable for
cooler weather when layered over a turtle-neck, and perfect over a tank top for warmer days. Dress them up with
dresses or suits, or wear them casually with jeans and skirts; and above all, stay cool!"(pg 2)
From the foreword.....
"There are several points to consider before starting any lacework project, whether you're working from a published pattern or designing your own stitches and garments. I've learned the following information and techniques from many years of first-hand experience, a striving for originality, and the constant search for a better method, a more pleasing stitch, and an improved chance for success. Many of the tips offered here can also be used for knitting in general; however, this publication will not attempt to teach you to knit, as the explanation of basic knitting techniques can be found in many books and magazines. My reason for sharing this knowledge is for you to understand the structure and the nature of lacework; in order to enjoy the knitting experience without frustration, and to have expert results in your handiwork.
I'm presenting much of the information in point form, thus keeping the many details of each topic in a relatively logical order, yet separated from each other. I've organized it this way as a guide for knitters to use; to learn how to follow instructions more easily, knit with less mistakes, study a knitting technique, develop a new eyelet lace stitch pattern, or design a lacework sweater. The technical nature of some portions of the text is not intended to dissuade you from this type of knitting; basic knitting skills and the ability to follow a pattern are all you need to be able to knit simple lacework patterns. As you become comfortable knitting on that level, you may find yourself intrigued; interested in attempting more complicated patterns, or in trying advanced techniques, some of which are included here.
My hope is that you gain the confidence to develop your skills in this enjoyable style of knitting, and the inspiration to use your creativity, imagination, and knowledge to have an accomplished and gratifying venture into lacework."
