The Bohus Knitting style, originating in Sweden in the 1930's, was created initially
as a means for women to supplement their family's income during the depression era. It evolved into a network of designers and knitters creating unusual colour and textural patterned garments, sold and valued internationally under the label 'Bohus Stickning'.
Under the exceptional leadership of Emma Jacobsson the business flourished and she protected the
designs from being reproduced for the mass market. Though the designs were not to be reproduced until 50 years after her death the author obtained special permission to include several designs in this publication.
The early beginnings of these exceptional designs and the women who created and knit them, are
described, along with photographs of garments, the founder Emma Jacobsson, the designers with their work and the many skilled women who knit these marvellous designs. The finely worked stitches in subtle blendings of colour and the textural effects of purl stitches in the geometric patterns combine to create designs with a timeless beauty.
There were several different articles in the Bohus Stickning line - mittens, hats, sweaters - many of
which were co-ordinated designs. Colour photographs are shown of these exquisite designs and samples of the colour patterns cards which the knitters worked from.
Knitting techniques of the Bohus knitters are described, along with several designs for the reader to
make. Instructions are given for over 40 possible combinations of 16 original Bohus designs with 7 different garments. There are several yoke designs, many of which exemplify the beautiful blending of colours and subtle use of purl stitches for texture.
