In the Author's Words....
"This book opens a window on another time and another place. The place is
the turn of the twentienth century and the place is London, England......Piecework magazine is pleased to present this limited edition,
exact reproduction (neither alterations nor corrections were made to the
original) of Weldon's Practical Needlework , Volume 2. It is a
fitting example of needlework in history, hand in hand." (Introduction)
The 2nd in a series of reprints of Weldon's publications. Originally printed in the late 1800's, there are projects covering knitting, cross-stitch, crewel, crochet, applique, netting and macrame. There is more variety of needlework techniques in this volume, but does include knitting stockings, edgings and a variety of period knitted items.
In the sock pattern series there are a pair of cable socks, children's socks and an interesting Gentleman's Stocking in Berlin Pattern using 3 colours (shown on left). Given the variety of different types of needlework in this volume, it is a reminder that our great - grandmothers seldom 'specialized' but were knowledgeable in many different types of needlework.
