Shetland Swirl Shawl

This graceful shawl swirls around your shoulders in a froth of lovely Shetland lace. It stays in place with its unusual shaping, which is more than a semi-circle and shows the Shetland lace to fine advantage.

The shawl is worked by casting on four stitches at the middle top, then increasing with the "pi" method to create a semi-circular shape. Longer "wings" are shaped with extra increases on the long top edges. It is finished with a lace edging worked sideways and attached to the live stitches of the shawl. This is a garter stitch shawl with lace shaping on every row. Sample is shown in Slate Blue.

Design Details                   

Recommended yarn: 2 balls Fiddlesticks Knitting Exquisite
(laceweight - 50% mulberry silk, 50% merino wool) each ball approx. 50 g / 500 m.
Shawl uses approximately 950 m, or almost 2 full balls of Exquisite - it is important to get gauge.
Gauge of 25 stitches and 36 rows in lace pattern after blocking = about 5.5 inches square.

Finished size: is 30 inches along top curved edge of each "wing" and 27 inches down middle back.

Needles:
3 mm (US 2 or 3) 24-inch circular needles
or size needed to obtain gauge.
