In the Author's Words.... Essentials of Handspinning
"Learning to spin can be the start of a whole new discovery about
sheep and wool, quite apart from the delights of producing your
own yarns to make into garments of great character and warmth.
The following account should enable anyone interested in creating
such garments from their own spinning of wool, to do so. For this
reason, very detailed instructions are given for all the various
processes involved." (pg 3)
From the back cover..... Essentials of Handspinning
"There is
no need to purchase expensive equipment to find out if spinning
is something you would enjoy. A hand-spindle, a comb and some
fleece will start you off. This booklet has been written to
provide (in an inexpensive form) complete instructions for
learning to spin wool with a hand-spindle and later, if you wish,
with a spinning wheel. Information is given about fleece and
wool, about different preparations of wool and the styles of
spinning and types of yarn that can be made. It includes a
Chapter on the choice of a spinning wheel as well as explaining
the technical details of the mechanism and its adjustment and
maintenance. Help is given to produce handspun yarn corresponding
in size to various commercial yarns and thus enabling ordinary
knitting patterns to be used successfully. Lastly, there is a
glossary and a Chart for indentifying spinning faults and their
remedies."
