Fans with Flair designed by Marsha White

The traditional patterns of Shetland lace have been an inspiration for many lace knitters. Feather and Fan has been adapted in this pattern, creating the well known fan shape in both the scarf and hand warmer patterns. Larger 'fans' on the beginning and ending borders of the scarf create a feminine flare.

The scarf is worked in 2 halves, with the second half reversing the placement of the decreases, so that the 2 halves mirror each other. Garter stitch is also frequently used in the scarf stitch patterns. A "prevelance of purls" on the right side of the scarf helps to create a fabric that lays flat.

Scarf - 4 yarn weights
The scarf pattern is written for 4 yarn weights, so you can choose between light and lacy, fine fingering, cosy DK, or extra warm worsted yarns. The instructions are provided in both charted and written form.

Hand warmers - 3 yarn weights
The hand warmers are written for 3 yarn weights. If you knit the Laceweight scarf, and want matching hand warmers, use doubled laceweight and follow the instructions for the Fingering version.

Fans with Flair Fans with Flair
Traditional Feather and Fan lace uses sections of increases and decreases on the same row, followed by rows of plain knitting, all creating a lovely fan shape.

In the Fans with Flair variation of the pattern, the increases are worked on one row, and the decreases are spread out over several rows. This creates a lacier fabric and still maintains the fan shape.

Sample on the left uses shown in the colour Silver Cloud.

The sample on the right uses DK yarn, Fiddlesticks Knitting Silken Merino, colour Moss.

Fans with Flair On the left, in Worsted weight yarn, the sample is knit with Fiddlesticks Knitting Luscious Tweed, colour Moss Tweed.

The width repeats vary between the different yarn weights.
