In the Author's Words.... Knitting from the Top
"I like to knit in my own way, thinking in terms of the happiest possible relationship between the garment and the body inside it. Despite the popular myth, I've found that knitting from the top down is an easy way to achieve this happy relationship. Knitting from the top is easy because it insures a perfect fit with the barest minimum of
calculating." (pg 9)
Knitting from the Top
When published in 1972 this book presented challenging ideas about knitted garment construction and still does so today. Knitting from the top has several advantages - easy adjustment of body & arm lengths, better fitting shoulders and easier addition/ reduction of length for growing children, or changing fashions. One of the best advantages for fit with knitting from the top is being able to try the garment on as you knit.
There are instructions for making a variety of garments from classic raglan sweaters to seamless capes and skirts, from reversible pants to several different sweater styles (set-in sleeves, saddle shoulder, kimono sleeves and square-set sleeves).
The emphasis in the written directions is on teaching the reader the 'why' of knitting techniques and construction. As she says "some of the world's most magnificent knitting has been done in past centuries by uneducated European peasants, who never went to school and could not read and write and whose acquaintance with arithmetic was rudimentary at best. They knitted to clothe the body not strain the brain. If they could learn to approach knitting from this angle, so can we." (pg 11, Knitting from the Top)
